Conor McGregor lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229. McGregor tapped to a vicious neck crank in the 4th round.
I thought Conor looked good all things considered. Conor was coming off a two-year layoff. Conor fought Khabib. who was the worst style match up.
Conor was able to keep the fight standing for a good chunk of the fight but, but wasn’t able to capitalize. The first round didn’t have much action, but in the second round Khabib unleashed a hellacious barrage of ground strikes to McGregor that could have gotten the fight stopped, but McGregor was able to weather the storm. The round ended and McGregor was still all smiles, but at the point, he was spent. McGregor’s stamina continues to be his kryptonite. If the fight gets out of the second round McGregor always gets in trouble. If McGregor wants to get his title back, he’s going to need to greatly improve his stamina. Conor was also dropped by a huge right hand in the third round.
The brawl after the fight was a disgrace. Brendan Schaub totally called the post-fight antics on The Joe Rogan Experience. Khabib shouldn’t have attacked Dillon Danis and Conor shouldn’t have shattered a bus window with a dolly. Two wrongs don’t make a right. I hope that when these two fight again it will be more civil, but it probably won’t be. Conor got very personal when verbally attacking Khabib. Conor vs Khabib II will be a huge fight down the line. The brawl has added another layer.
I would like to see Tony Ferguson challenge Khabib for the title. Ferguson deserves a title shot, he’s 12-1 in UFC. Conor shouldn’t get an immediate rematch and should have to work his way back to the title.
