James Gallagher’s antics were on full display Friday night at Bellator 204. Just before the fight started Gallagher got in the face of his opponent and was mocking him and making a big show. The whole thing was Conor McGregoresque. It’s hard not to look at Gallagher and think of him as a Conor McGregor knockoff. That may be a harsh thing to say, but it’s essentially who he is.
All it takes is one bad fight for the hype train to derail. That’s exactly what happened to Gallagher on Friday night. Gallagher was one Bellator MMA’s hottest prospects going into his fight with Ricky Bandejas. Gallagher entered the fight with a 7-0 record, including 4-0 in Bellator with 3 finishes via rear-naked choke. His opponent Ricky Bandejas is a former CFCC champion with a record of 11-1.
After the pre-fight theatrics, the fight started and it was not a great start for Gallagher who was getting pieced up by Bandejas. The fight ended with Gallagher getting massacred with a “Sweet Chin Music” type sidekick and subsequent punches after that finished the fight.
The thing about Conor McGregor is that he has an anatomically precise left hand that can back up all his talking. Gallagher has a decent ground game, his striking needs improvement. Gallagher is young and has lots of room to grow. I’m not sure where he goes from here but, he should probably tone down the Conor McGregor act.
