Jake Matthews is going to be a problem. On Saturday morning in Singapore, Matthews quickly dispatched Shinsho Anzai. Matthews has always been an under the radar prospect in my opinion, but recently he’s starting to put it all the together.
Matthews is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has many submission victories. The thing that struck me during Matthew’s fight with Anzai was that striking was the thing that set up his rear naked choke victory. Matthews hit Anzai will multiple knees to the face that dazed Anzai and set up the win.
Matthews is on a 3 fight winning streak after coming off 2 losses. Matthews has 3 losses in UFC. Matthews lost to lightweight contender Kevin Lee who has blossomed in the last year. Matthews lost to James Vick who is 10-1 in UFC. The Loss to Andrew Holbrook was a bit of a mystery considering Matthews is a superior fighter in every way.
I also noticed that Matthews is starting to grow into his body. Matthews started fighting in UFC when he was 19 years old. Matthews body had a lot of physical maturing left. Between refining his game and filling out his body Matthews is going to be a guy that you’re going to want to keep an eye on.
